Can CBD Help Treat Cerebral Palsy (CP)?

According to the CDC, more than 760 thousand people in the United States have at least one symptom of cerebral palsy. Furthermore, 1 in 323 American children have been diagnosed and identified with this condition. Globally, approximately 17 million people have cerebral palsy.

What is Cerebral Palsy (CP)?

Cerebral palsy is a condition brought on by damage to an infant’s brain that results in serious implications. The common symptoms of cerebral palsy include uncontrolled and random movements, seizures, spasms, weak arms or legs, abnormal body structure, clumsy, jerky, or fidgety movements, delayed in development milestones like not being able to sit unassisted by eight months, or not being able to walk by 18 months, and walking on tiptoes.

There are four types of cerebral palsy. These are:

  • Athetoid CP– Muscle tone is affected which causes uncontrolled and involuntary spasms.
  • Ataxic CP– Coordination and balance is affected which leads to shaky movements and tremors.
  • Spastic CP– Muscles feel tight and stiff which causes difficulty in movement.
  • Mixed CP– Combination of any of the above types of cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy can also lead to other developmental issues such as:

  • Vision problem
  • Learning disabilities
  • Speaking and communication problems
  • Fits or seizures
  • Drooling, feeding and swallowing difficulties
  • Difficulty controlling the bladder

To this day, there is still no cure for cerebral palsy. But there are some interesting studies which suggest that using CBD on cerebral palsy patients could potentially reduce the symptoms of the said condition.

How can CBD help Cerebral Palsy?

Here’s what studies are saying…

In a study that was conducted by Wolfson Medical Center on the effectiveness of CBD in improving the condition of children with cerebral palsy, they found out that CBD oils seem to reduce and improve the children’s motor skills, bowel movements, sleep quality, and overall mood.

In 2011, Hirsh et al. carried out a study that was later published in the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. In the said study, they asked cerebral palsy patients what medication are they using for pain relief and how effective they found it to be. The patients that used CBD self-rated it as the most helpful pain treatment out of any used. This result proved that cannabis based medical treatment is an effective pain reliever for people who are suffering from cerebral palsy.

In 2007, a case study was published in Reviews in Neurological Diseases. The study investigated the effectiveness of CBD as an antiepileptic. The case study looked at the case of a 45-year-old man who suffered from cerebral palsy and epilepsy. They observed that the man showed great improvement with the use of CBD. This made them conclude that cannabis based treatment is beneficial for patients who suffer from seizures which is a common symptom of cerebral palsy.

In another study that was published in 2014, it showed cannabis based medicines like CBD can be effective in reducing painful muscle spasms. Even though this 2014 study was focused on people who suffers from multiple sclerosis, the result of the study is still vital because spasms are one of the most common symptoms of people with cerebral palsy.

Final Thoughts on CBD and Cerebral Palsy

Bottom-line, there is still no known cure for cerebral palsy. And CBD as an alternative treatment only focuses on helping those people diagnosed with this disease to live their lives as normal as possible. The good news is, most of the studies that have been conducted showed that CBD oil is an effective alternative treatment in helping reduce the symptoms of cerebral palsy. Just remember that CBD oil, by no means, is not a guaranteed treatment or cure to cerebral palsy. But as mentioned, the effects of CBD based on the limited research that had been done has all been positive.

Lastly, before using CBD products, make sure to do a little bit of research on what CBD is all about and consult your doctor or medical experts on the proper and correct CBD application and dosage.
