CBD Oil and Depression: Can Cannabidiol Heal Depression?

When sadness takes over a person’s life and it seems there is no end in sight, then beware. This sadness can morph into a more serious problem called depression – a disorder that can harm both the body and the mind.

Depression is a mental health disorder that is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. It cultivates a feeling of sadness that leads to different emotional and physical problems. Depression can be connected to conditions like inflammation and structural brain changes resulting from trauma or chronic stress.

Symptoms of depression include:

  • fatigue
  • anxiety
  • irritability
  • restlessness, loss of enjoyment
  • appetite changes
  • sleep pattern changes
  • suicidal thoughts

In the United States, approximately 7.6 percent of Americans aged 12 and above were diagnosed with depression between 2009 and 2012. And in 2016, more than 16 million American adults had a minimum of one depressive episode in the previous year. It was also found out that depression was more common among women aged 40 and 59.

Can CBD Heal Depression?

There is still no concrete and fool proof scientific and medical evidence that CBD can heal depression. However, it has shown great promise in treating the said condition. And with the recent signing of the 2018 Farm Bill Law, CBD’s popularity as an alternative treatment not only to depression but also to other diseases has risen even further.

Studies show that CBD helps improve the symptoms of depression by enhancing the activity of receptors to which serotonin (the chemical that has a wide variety of functions in the human body or sometime called the happy chemical) binds. The effects of CBD on the endocannabinoid system and its ability to release and optimize serotonin can also have a calming and relaxing effect typically associated with cannabidiol.

CBD oil is available in different forms including capsules, tinctures, concentrates and topical forms. But the most common way to administer CBD is by taking it orally. When it comes to CBD dosing, it is recommended that you start out with the lowest dose possible and work your way up to the right CBD amount level that works for you.

Here is a CBD Dosage Chart that you can follow.

CBD Side Effects

Even if CBD is generally considered safe, some people still experience some side effects such as:

  • diarrhea
  • drowsiness
  • nausea
  • dry mouth
  • change of appetite

So, before you start using CBD, it is still best to do some research on what CBD is all about. It is also wise to talk to medical professionals about any potential side effects of taking CBD, and if the current medications that you are already taking could negatively interact with CBD.

What Studies Are Saying

Studies regarding the use of CBD as an alternative treatment to depression as well as anxiety are expanding. Much of the current research into the use of CBD in depression had been on animals.

In a study conducted in 2010 on lab mice, it concluded that CBD displayed “antidepressant like effects comparable to imipramine”, a well-known anti depressant drug. In the study, the lab mice were put through a swimming test to determine the effects of CBD on motivation. The result of the experiment showed that CBD had a positive effect on the physical activity of the mice.

In 2011, a study was also conducted to look at the role of the endocannabinoid system in mitigating depression. After the study was finished, they concluded that “a deficiency in endocannabinoid signaling is enough to produce s depressive-like phenotype”. It was also found out that by reversing the said deficiency, CBD could help treat symptoms of depression.

In another mouse study conducted in 2016, it was found out that serotonin and glutamate levels significantly increased after dosing with CBD. After injecting the mice with CBD, researchers noted “fast anti-depressant-like actions”.

Bottom Line

If you think you are suffering with depression or anxiety symptoms and the anti-depressant medications that you are taking is not working, then, CBD oil may be a good option to try. There is no loss in trying CBD oil as an alternative treatment for your depression. The different studies and research that have been made have all positive things to say about the medicinal and therapeutic properties of CBD.
