Is it safe for women to take CBD during and after pregnancy?

It is a proven fact that marijuana, as most research indicates, is not safe during and after pregnancy because of its high THC content. According to pediatrics, using marijuana during pregnancy may negatively affect uterine blood flow plus THC can transfer to breast milk that can affect the development of the infant.

What about CBD?

Truth be told, CBD shares a lot of common properties with marijuana. But the difference is, the THC content found in CBD is less than 0.03%. This means that taking in CBD will not in any way let the user experience psychoactive high. So if this is the case about CBD, is it now safe to assume that using CBD during and after pregnancy is safe? Well, here’s what we found out.

Very Limited Research

The most important thing to understand if you want to use CBD during and after pregnancy is that there is not that much research done with regards to this matter. Most research and studies that were conducted regarding cannabis use during and after pregnancy was largely targeted towards the use of marijuana. The general conclusion regarding the use of marijuana during and after pregnancy is that it is dangerous and not worth the risk.

Even if this is the case for marijuana, it doesn’t mean that CBD is also dangerous. It just means that because there are still not enough study conducted on the use of CBD during pregnancy and after pregnancy stage, CBD is still not recommended without proper consultation or without speaking first with your doctor or CBD health expert.

What Are The Potential Uses Of CBD During and After Pregnancy?

While there is still no concrete evidence about the safety of CBD for pregnant and breastfeeding women, there are some who validated that CBD helped them address some symptoms specific to pregnancy.

Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy stage are common to most expectant mothers. But a more serious condition called Hyperemesis Gravidarum or a condition characterized by severe nausea and persistent vomiting is dangerous because mothers may become dehydrated and even struggle to maintain a healthy weight. Taking in CBD may offer some relief due to its ability to relieve pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Sleep issues are also a problem experienced by pregnant women. In fact, according to data gathered, more than 94% of pregnant women experience sleep issues with some even experiencing severe and persistent insomnia. This is why some expectant mothers turn to CBD which has been associated with improvements in sleep.

Anxiety disorder is also experienced by women during and after pregnancy. It is estimated that about 10 percent of pregnant women and between 4.4% and 10.8% of women in their postpartum period will experience an anxiety disorder. Preliminary studies have found out that CBD can help reduce symptoms of anxiety.

Final Word

As we said earlier, there is still no concrete evidence that CBD can help women during and after pregnancy. While it is true that there are numerous benefits in using CBD, it is still best to consult with your healthcare provider if you want to try CBD most especially if you are pregnant or if you are in your postpartum stage.
